Tweddle doubts 2012 participation

22.07.2008

Gymnast Beth Tweddle has said that the Beijing Games in August is likely to be her last Olympics.

The 22-year-old, who won World Championship gold on the uneven bars in 2007, says she does not expect to compete at the London Games in 2012.

"I doubt you'll see me in 2012. I think I will be just there as a spectator," Cheshire-resident Tweddle told the BBC.

"The World Championships are in London in 2009 so I'll have to use that as my own Olympics in front of a home crowd."

However, Tweddle says the desire to compete at this summer's Games is as strong as it ever was.

"I still enjoy it and I am still competing at the highest level so there is no need for me to give up just yet."

And Tweddle says she will be fit and ready for Beijing, having just overcome a foot injury.

"Everything is coming together well, both me and my coach are very happy with how things are going.

"The doctors are keeping an eye on me and are really pleased with my progress.

"Things aren't perhaps as good as they could have been but are definitely better than I thought they would be a few weeks ago."
