Wales unveils Olympics sites bid
04.03.2008
Some 31 sites in Wales will be put forward as potential training venues for countries competing in the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. The facilities include the National Pool in Swansea, Wrexham's Queensway Stadium, Cardiff's Welsh Institute of Sport and Newport's Sports Village. Heritage minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas backed the bid to attract competitors. "Teams will come to Wales because of our great, world-class facilities," Thomas said. "The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games aren't just coming to London in 2012, they are coming to the whole of the UK. "I want to remind everyone about that and what we have to offer here in Wales." There is no guarantee that teams will choose any of the venues, but Thomas said the fact so many Welsh facilities had been included in the brochure demonstrated "the high standard of sports facilities we have here in Wales". "We have already had great success through attracting one of the largest Paralympic teams, the Australians, to Wales for their pre-games camp," he added "I'm confident that the hard work going on behind the scenes will lead to more teams taking advantage of the world-class facilities we have here in Wales." It has been estimated that a major team, such as the Australian Paralympic team, would be expected to invest around Ј1m in the local economy where they are based. The 31 facilities in Wales, put forward in the official guide released on Monday, are a mix of multi-sports and single sports. Natural facilities, such as Canolfan Tryweryn, the National Whitewater Centre in Bala, north Wales, Plas y Brenin near Capel Curig for mountain biking and Pwllhelli Sailing Club are included, as are sporting facilities at Welsh universities.
